Faculty Q&A: Hannah Smith

Meet Hannah Smith, a beef systems extension educator with Nebraska Extension.
May 22, 2023

What is your position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I am the beef systems extension educator for Brown, Keya Paha, and Rock Counties.

What drew you to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I initially came to the University of Nebraska- Lincoln for the Feedlot Management Internship program and then completed my master’s following that program. UNL is a leader in ruminant nutrition research and education, therefore I felt it was the best place to expand my knowledge around beef cattle production. Coming back after spending some time in private industry was the combination of location and opportunity in rural Nebraska that extension excels in serving.

What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy being surrounded by constantly evolving questions, research, and information that allows me to consistently challenge my mental models and push myself to continually expand my understanding of the field and the application of new information.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

As much as I would love to answer with something related to my short time in this position, honestly, it was achieving a life-long goal of starting my cowherd in 2019.

What is something that most people don't know about you?

I am a slightly extroverted introvert.

What is your life like outside of work?

My husband and I ranch with his parents as the 5th generation of the operation that was homesteaded by his ancestors. I enjoy getting to be a ranch hand in the evenings and on the weekends and ground truth a lot of what we talk about within Beef Systems Extension. Additionally, I enjoy spending time on the golf course and the trap range and getting back to Kentucky to visit family.
