Lincoln, Neb. — Construction is slated to begin next month to improve the greenspace on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus. The area, known as Legacy Plaza Meadows, is an open space between the Nebraska East Union, Massengale Residential Center, Dinsdale Family Learning Commons and the UNL Dairy Store.

Plans for the renovated greenspace include the addition of outdoor seating and performance areas, terraced landscaping, updated walkways that improve ADA accessibility, additional lighting, and construction of a small parking lot to increase public access to East Campus’s public spaces, including Maxwell Arboretum and the UNL Dairy Store.

The goal is the make the space more inviting and accessible to East Campus students, faculty and staff and visitors.

Preparations for the project began earlier this week, when UNL staff began removing trees, including several ash trees susceptible to emerald ash borer. On Nov. 3, the contractor, BluCor Construction Group, will be on-site and will begin placing fencing around the construction area. Some walkways and building entrances will be inaccessible for all or part of the construction period. Future communications will provide more details on affected entrances, and signage will be placed around campus indicating closed walkways and alternate routes.

Construction is anticipated to last between 8 and 12 months.
