About Samantha Gerken:
Born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Davenport, Iowa, I moved to Lincoln in 2013. Prior to my residency in Nebraska, I attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where I held positions as the president of Public Relations Student Society of America, vice president of public relations for the student union board and an advertising account executive at the Iowa State Daily newspaper. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in advertising with a minor in psychology from ISU, I worked as a public relations professional at one of Nebraska’s largest advertising agencies, Swanson Russell, for two years.
What is your position at UNL?
Under the Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development program, I work as the marketing and engagement coordinator for a grant-funded project called Click2Science. Click2Science provides resources for out-of-school time professionals serving youth in informal learning environments.
What drew you to UNL?
UNL has a great reputation throughout Nebraska. I was drawn to the marketing and engagement coordinator position with Click2Science due to its mission to create more positive out-of-school learning experiences for youth. I also enjoy being in a place where next generation leaders come to learn.
What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?
I appreciate working in an educational setting because it fosters personal growth, education, and professional development.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I believe my greatest achievements aren’t in the past – they’re in the present and future. Every minute of every day, I strive to achieve something great and become a better version of myself. So in short, I don’t have one pivotal moment, but a steady series of small achievements in each aspect of my life.
What is something that most people don't know about you?
I climbed Mount Everest while backpacking across the Himalayas once… in a really vivid dream, which is pretty much the same thing right?
What is your life like outside of work?
Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my family, friends, boyfriend and my adorable dog Jax. I enjoy doing anything outdoors and active – running, cycling, hiking – you name it! I also love traveling, cooking and DIY projects. My friends joke that I never sit down to relax because I’m always on the go, but when I do get the chance, I like to snuggle up with a cup of coffee and a good movie or book.
