Lincoln, Neb. —
What is your background before coming to the University of Nebraska Lincoln?
Before coming to UNL I worked in the retail garden industry for close to 13 years and was an Extension Master Gardener Volunteer with Douglas-Sarpy Counties for 10 years.
What is your position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?
I am with Nebraska Extension, where I co-lead the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer (EMGV) program for Douglas-Sarpy Counties, the largest in the state, with nearly 300 dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers share research-based best management practices with clients, empowering them to make well-informed decisions rooted in accurate and unbiased knowledge. Our work truly embodies Chancellor Bennett’s philosophy 'Every Interaction Matters,' as we aim to create meaningful and lasting connections through education and service. I also serve on the Staff Senate representing District 6.
What drew you to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?
Being affiliated with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been a longtime goal of mine. I am drawn to the academic atmosphere and the emphasis on continuous learning. The opportunity to give back to the community through education and outreach aligns perfectly with my values and professional mission. Working here allows me to make a tangible difference in people’s lives while being part of a university that prioritizes both growth and service.
What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?
My background in the retail industry laid a strong foundation for meeting people where they are and understanding their unique needs. In my role with Nebraska Extension, I get to share knowledge freely, without the focus on selling, and instead, with the goal of genuinely empowering others. The best part is witnessing those 'a-ha' moments—seeing clients understand a new concept or learn a practice that will truly make a difference for them.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
It is hard to pinpoint a single greatest achievement because two moments stand out as pivotal in my life. One was being admitted to graduate school at UNL—a milestone I had not thought possible—and earning my master’s degree in 2011, which was incredibly meaningful. The other was coming out as gay during my undergraduate years, a defining moment of self-acceptance and authenticity. Both achievements represent important parts of who I am today and reflect my commitment to growth, both academically and personally.
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
Most people do not know that I kill a lot of plants—unintentionally, of course. People often assume I am an amazing grower but, in all honesty, I make a lot of mistakes. Our yard has some weeds and dead spots along with a collection of mix-matched plants.
What is your life like outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my partner and our two cats, often outdoors, working in our yard or daydreaming about its future. Before the pandemic, my hobbies outside of work revolved around gardening, bike riding, and growing houseplants. During the pandemic, I picked up weaving on a 15 inch rigid heddle loom, and it has quickly become a favorite pastime.
