Lincoln, Neb. —Nebraska Extension held a Bean Growers Day on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the Henry J Stumpf International Wheat Center in Grant, Neb. The 38 attendees received information from Nebraska Extension specialists and educators on irrigation management, iron chlorosis management, and disease recognition and management in peas and dry beans.

Other topics covered were Palmer amaranth weed management, thrips, and lygus bug management in dry beans and peas. The dry bean industry provided an update. Sponsors for the event were Jacks Bean, Kelley Bean, Trinidad Benham, and the Nebraska Dry Bean Commission.

Nationally, dry bean production in Nebraska ranks first in Great Northerns, second in Pintos, and fourth in light red kidney and all dry edible beans such as black-eyed peas. This produces approximately one billion servings of beans. A short video highlighting dry bean producers and production in Nebraska can be found at Dry Edible Beans | CropWatch (unl.edu) .
